Featured Topics and Special Guests: "Preserving the Matriarchy: Bridging Intergenerational and Cross-Cultural Tension" with Philip Nguyen, President of the Union of North American Vietnamese Student Associations (UNAVSA) and Christine Tran, Managing Director for the Vietnamese American Arts & Letters Association (VAALA).
Philip Nguyen teaches Asian American Studies in the College of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State University and is the the current President of the Union of North American Vietnamese Student Associations (UNAVSA). He is the Producer for ACCENTED: Dialogues in Diaspora presented by the Diasporic Vietnamese Artists Network (DVAN) and the Community Organizing Manager for the Vietnamese American Roundtable, a nonprofit based in San Jose, California, and the Co-Chair of the Young Vietnamese Americans (YVA) Committee for PIVOT - The Progressive Vietnamese American Organization. He was born and raised in SoCal but currently lives in Oakland, CA, and is passionate about all things relating to the Vietnamese and Southeast Asian diasporas.
Christine Yen Tran-Phan is passionate about telling stories – whether they’re about businesses or the Vietnamese-American experience. She is a core organizer for commongroundoc, an open mic space organized by Viet progressives, where she helped pave its 2020 virtual workshop and open mic platform. Her poem and art piece, “Was It Dark?” was exhibited in VAALA’s Generations: 40 Hues between Black and White in 2015. Christine has volunteered with VAALA's Viet Film Fest as its Events and Marketing Director since 2018. Currently, she is focused on building infrastructure and management in her role as Managing Director at VAALA.
